#62 Ruddy Turnstone

The chunky, short-legged, calico-patterned Ruddy Turnstone is, like most shorebirds, a long-distance traveler. It breeds in the arctic tundra and winters on rocky shorelines and sandy beaches on six continents. The wet, slippery rocks of those shorelines would be tough for some birds (or us) to navigate, but Ruddy Turnstones have feet adapted to them and a low center of gravity that keeps them grounded.
