#11 Loggerhead Shrike

The “Butcherbird,” as the masked Loggerhead Shrike is known, is a songbird that acts like a raptor. In grasslands and open country, it preys on insects, birds, lizards, and small mammals, and because it lacks a raptor’s talons, it skewers its kill on thorns or barbed wire. Although their numbers have dropped sharply in North America, they’re still quite common in the South and regularly perch on fence posts and power lines.
